We first visited Afghanistan in 1972. The purchase of a few rugs for our own use led to a passion for rugs and further exploratory trips to Afghanistan. We have been juggling careers in the arts and in dealing in tribal arts ever since.
We have made over 30 visits to Afghanistan between us, collecting old tribal rugs and weavings. In the 1970s, Afghanistan was a peaceful country, and we travelled to remote areas in the search for elusive rug and textile rarities. Tribal rugs, we believe, should be judged according to their aesthetic qualities, not simply age or knots per square inch. Alexandra looks at the rugs and textiles with an artist's eye. The weavers are artists, and should be recognized as such.
Our travels have taken us to many remote areas - from the highlands of West Irian, to Kashgar in Chinese Turkestan, from northern Afghanistan to central Java.
Our prices include delivery charges to most countries.

Museum Quality
Pieces from our collections have been acquired by Australian public museums from our earliest days. A collection of Javanese wayang golek was purchased by the National Gallery of Victoria in 1972, and in 1975 the Gallery purchased our collection of Indian shadow puppets. Early purchases by the National Gallery of Australia included a Central Asian velvet ikat chapan, and an unusual Muslim style patola sari from Gujarat. In 1989 the NGA purchased 147 pieces of Afghan/Central Asian costume from us. The NGV has several of our Central Asian pieces, and have recently purchased a group of Indus Valley quilts. One of our Afghan war rugs has been acquired by the Powerhouse Museum, Sydney.
