Old 'pat'painting from Puri, Orissa. Collected Puri, 1981. Pigment
on paper, made for pilgrims attending the annual procession of
the Lord Jaganath
from the Jaganath Temple. The figures represent
Jaganath, Subhadra and Balbhadra. The gods are brought out
each year drawn on massive chariots. The
English word Juggernaut
derives from Jaganath, from the unstoppable movement of the chariots
through the crowds of pilgrims. A$300 |
