Cotton prayer rug - jai namaz - probably Gujarat, early C20.
Cotton rugs were made in prisons during the Moghul period, and the practice was followed under the British. The large cotton durries known as satranji were made by prisoners under the Afghan government until the late 1970s in order to get training, and to earn a living. This jai namaz is a part of a saph, a long row of jai namaz made for a mosque. Collected Gujarat, late 1970s.
